Jeddah Airport to Makkah: train vs taxi vs bus
Three real options connect King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) with Makkah (Mecca): the Haramain high-speed train from the airport's own station, scheduled buses, and a private taxi. Which one fits depends on your group size, luggage and arrival time — here is the honest comparison.
The comparison at a glance
| Private taxi | Haramain train | Bus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price basis | Fixed per vehicle — from SAR 300 for the whole car | Per seat, per class — dynamic fares set by date on the official booking site | Per seat — usually the cheapest option; check the operator for current fares |
| Door to door | Yes — arrivals hall to your Makkah hotel, about 1 hour 15 minutes | No — airport station to Makkah station, then onward transport to your hotel | No — fixed stops, then onward transport to your hotel |
| Luggage | The whole vehicle — up to 10 bags in a van | One piece up to 25 kg (65 × 55 × 35 cm) plus one hand item, per passenger | Hold space per seat; bulky family loads are a squeeze |
| Late-night arrival | Runs whenever your flight lands — the driver tracks your flight | Fixed daily timetable — after the last departure you need another option | Scheduled services only |
| Booking | Online, guest checkout, instant confirmation | sar.hhr.sa, per passenger | Operator sites or on the day |

The group math
Per-seat pricing multiplies by headcount; per-vehicle pricing does not. A family of five with eight bags needs five train or bus seats — with the luggage allowance already tight at one 25 kg piece per person on the train — plus onward transport from the station to their hotel with all of it. One van at a fixed SAR 450 takes the same family and luggage from the arrivals hall to the hotel door in a single leg. For solo travellers the math flips: one seat is cheaper than one car.
Landing late at night?
Many Umrah flights land at JED after midnight. Trains and buses run to timetables; if your flight lands after the last departure — or a delay pushes you past it — you are choosing between waiting and negotiating on the spot. A prebooked transfer is scheduled against your actual landing time: the driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals whenever you land, at the price you already locked in. Check the official Haramain timetable for your date before relying on a late train.
When the train or bus is the better choice
Solo traveller with one bag, daytime arrival that fits the timetable? The train from the airport station is fast and usually cheaper — book it atsar.hhr.sa. On the tightest budget with time to spare, the bus is usually cheapest of all. The private taxi earns its price for groups, luggage, and late arrivals.
