Makkah to Madinah: train vs taxi

Both work, and each genuinely wins for different travellers. The honest answer for the 420 km journey between Makkah (Mecca) and Madinah (Medina): the Haramain train is usually the better deal for a solo traveller with light luggage, and a private taxi usually wins for families and groups. Here is the math.

The both-ends reality

Train fares and journey times look great in isolation, but the stations are not at your hotel. A fair comparison includes a transfer from your Makkah hotel to Makkah station, station arrival time and security, the rail leg, then a transfer from Madinah station to your hotel near Al-Masjid an-Nabawi — two extra rides that cost money and time in both cities, with your luggage carried through each leg.

The luggage question

The train allows one 25 kg piece plus a hand item per passenger. Umrah luggage — Zamzam containers, gifts, winter clothing for the return — routinely exceeds that for families.See the full luggage allowance guide.

Per-seat vs per-vehicle: the worked examples

  • Solo, one bag:one train seat plus two short station transfers is usually the cheapest combination. The train wins on price — take it.
  • Couple, light luggage:two seats plus four station-transfer legs vs one fixed SAR 750 car. Compare your date's fares — daytime travel with little luggage often still favours the train; heavy luggage tips it to the taxi.
  • Family of 6 with 12 bags:six seats, four transfer legs, and double the train's luggage allowance. One 10-seater van at a fixed SAR 1050 carries everyone and everything hotel to hotel — for groups like this, the vehicle usually wins on both cost and simplicity.
